The music industry is still mourning the loss of neo soul pioneer D’Angelo. The hit maker who created classics such as Brown Sugar and Lady passed away in October at 51 years old.
DJ Premier Calls Out ‘Fake Love’ From D’Angelo Funeral Attendees
D’Angelo was laid to rest in a private celebration of life earlier this month at St. Paul’s baptist church in Henrico, Virginia. The service featured appearances by many of D’Angelo’s close industry cohorts, such as Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, and The Roots. But the family wanted to make sure that the abundance of starpower at the service didn’t overshadow the fact that it is still a mourning period. So they asked for the service to remain private, with no photos or videos allowed.
However, DJ Premier, one of the attendees at the service, said that many people ignored the family’s request. And he tore into people for the disrespectful gesture.
“You’ve got to fill out an application to get in and get approved,” Premier said in a social media post via AllHipHop. “And before you submitted it as a thing at the bottom that said, ‘Please don’t post, please don’t film. And let’s keep it private for the viewing and the service.’”
He also called out people for showing”fake love” to the fallen R&B star.
“People are running amok all over there, and they’re posting sh*t, posting the program with the whole service, and even the cemetery. That shows that fake love is even at your funeral, man, but it is what it is,” Premier added.
Before his passing, D’Angelo had privately battled cancer.
D’Angelo leaves behind a rich legacy as one of the godfathers of the neo soul genre. He also won Grammys for Best R&B Album for Voodoo and Black Messiah, as well as for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”.
May D’Angelo Rest in Peace.
