DJ Quik is making his stance on artificial intelligence in music clear, calling the growing technology a “total violation of culture” and pushing back against the idea of AI recreating the work of living artists.
Speaking on the issue, the legendary West Coast producer described the use of an artist’s sound, style or identity through AI as a form of appropriation.
“It’s a total violation of culture. It’s appropriation,” Quik said. “You can’t recreate somebody that’s still here doing what they do.”
Quik also made it clear that he does not want his own music or creative style used to train or imitate AI systems, arguing that technology still cannot capture the small details that make human creativity unique.
“Don’t use my stuff because I know that computer is not gonna have my nuances,” he explained, pointing to AI-generated content that mispronounces words and lacks a natural human feel.
For Quik, even imperfect music created by a real person is more valuable than polished material generated by artificial intelligence.
“I’d rather have bad human material than good AI material. How bout that,” he said.
His comments add to the growing debate within hip-hop over AI, as artists and producers continue to wrestle with questions surrounding creativity, ownership, authenticity and whether technology should have a place in the culture at all.
