David Marvin Blake Jr., the son of famed West Coast hip-hop producer and rapper DJ Quik, has been found guilty in connection with a 2022 shooting that left one man dead. On Thursday (Dec. 4), a Los Angeles County jury convicted Blake of second-degree murder and shooting from a motor vehicle, according to the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office.
The charges stem from the killing of 33-year-old Julio Moises Cardoza Jr. on May 25, 2022, in Downey, Calif., following a fight between Cardoza and another individual. Prosecutors say Blake fired multiple shots from a nearby vehicle before driving away. Cardoza suffered several gunshot wounds and later died at a local hospital. Blake was arrested the next day in Porter Ranch and held on a $2 million bond.
Before his arrest, Blake was pursuing a rap career under the name D. Blake, making appearances on his father’s 2014 album The Midnight Life and releasing solo tracks including “Official,” “Rollin” featuring Kinglife Herb, and “I Wanna Know (Remix)” with Dom Kennedy.
At the time of the shooting, Blake was working as a liaison for Compton City Councilman Isaac Galvin. Galvin was removed from office later that year amid election fraud allegations and eventually pleaded guilty in 2024 to accepting bribes in exchange for cannabis business permits.
Blake’s sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 6, 2026, where he faces 40 years to life in state prison.
