On Wednesday (May 7), jurors found 32-year-old Matthew Hughes guilty of first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking for breaking into the rapper’s Clinton Township home last August. Hughes reportedly entered the residence through an unlocked door and stole a bicycle. Once spotted by Eminem’s security team, he fled the scene.
Four days later, an employee of Eminem recognized Hughes at a nearby Walmart, leading to his arrest.
Eminem took the stand during the trial. After just 30 minutes of deliberation, the jury returned guilty verdicts on both charges. Sentencing is set for June 17.
Hughes has been held in Macomb County Jail since his August 30, 2024, arrest. A judge denied his release after he failed to post a $500,000 bond and ordered him to have no contact with the rapper.
This marks the second time Hughes has illegally entered Eminem’s property. In 2020, he broke into the artist’s Detroit-area home by smashing a window with a brick. During that incident, Hughes confronted Eminem and allegedly threatened to kill him before the rapper subdued him until police arrived.
Hughes pleaded guilty to second-degree home invasion in that case and received a sentence of time served and five years of probation in September 2021. However, his probation was revoked just two months later following an arrest for simple assault, resulting in additional jail time.
He was released on parole in May 2024. The second break-in occurred just a few months later—25 years after the release of The Marshall Mathers LP, which included the track “Stan,” a haunting portrayal of obsessive fan behavior.
