Jeezy recently sat down with Complex to rank the five best songs from his career, reflecting on some of the records that helped define his legacy in Hip-Hop.
Among the selections, Jeezy placed “Put On” featuring Kanye West at No. 3 on his personal Top 5 list. While discussing the 2008 anthem, he also shared the story behind Ye’s memorable guest verse.
According to Jeezy, Kanye recorded the verse during a difficult period following the passing of his mother, Donda West, when he had stepped away from making music for a period of time.
“He was like, ‘Yo Jeezy, I haven’t did any verses in a long time, but for you, I’ll see what I can come up with,’” Jeezy recalled.
When Jeezy finally heard what Kanye recorded, he immediately recognized that the verse was something different.
“I had never heard nothing like that. That was a special moment,” Jeezy said.
Released on Jeezy’s The Recession, “Put On” became one of the biggest records of his career and remains one of his most recognizable collaborations. Its placement at No. 3 on Jeezy’s own Top 5 shows just how highly he still views the record nearly two decades later.
