We are just days away from what many anticipate being a Super Friday for Hip-Hop. One of the reasons for this excitement and anticipation is the release of Joey Bada$$’s upcoming effort “All-Amerikkkan Bada$$”. Joey is an artist that we have seen grow and mature over the years fresh out of High School. With the release of his single “Land Of The Free” we have seen Joey take on more of a social conscious tone that is not just reflective but real. He is speaking to his generation and addressing many of the thought and concerns that his Hip-Hop generation is contemplating at the moment. This is a generation that had President Obama as their President throughout their pre-teen and teenage years and President Trump is a bit of an adjustment. Joey takes a nationally televised stage draped in the American flag and spits some rhymes that could be labeled as controversial.
“In the land of the free, it’s full of free loaders
Leave us dead in the street to be the organ donors
They disorganized my people, made us all loners
Still got the last names of our slave owners”
And that’s just the chorus. The Stephen Colbert Show is also where Kendrick Lamar debuted some of his untitled work before releasing his critically acclaimed “To Pimp A Butterfly” album. The Colbert show is no stranger to socially conscious Hip-Hop music hitting the main stage to express it’s voice.
“Realize the real games that they tried to show us
300 plus years of them cold shoulders
Yet 300 million of us still got no focus
Sorry America, but I will not be your soldier
Obama just wasn’t enough, I just need some more closure
And Donald Trump is not equipped to take this country over
Let’s face facts ’cause we know what’s the real motives”
Lyrics like these make you anticipate what more Joey has to say on his upcoming release due Friday April 7th. Until then why have this powerful performance to go off of.
