After revealing her pregnancy in April, Latto had another major announcement about her fourth studio album. In a social media post, the rap star announced that the project, titled Big Mama, would be her last.
“5/29 My retirement album Thank you for everything,” she captioned her social media post on May 28.
Latto Changes Course on Retirement
However, in a new interview with Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis, Latto changed course on those plans. And detailed exactly why she made the social media post. She detailed to Alexis that at the time, she was dealing with postpartum depression. And was feeling “overwhelmed” as she was putting together her new project.
“That was definitely not one of the good days. Experiencing postpartum for the first time, you don’t know what to expect. I kind of underestimated it. That was just one of those days where I was at home and overwhelmed with the album,” she said.
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious, long-lasting mood disorder that occurs after childbirth. The condition can severely impact a parent’s physical and emotional well-being. It can also make it difficult to bond with the baby or handle daily responsibilities.
Needless to say, dealing with the condition, in addition to the pressure of putting together an album, was a heavy burden for Latto to carry.
“I was going through it that day,” Latto continued. “Today’s a good day. I wouldn’t say I’m retiring today. Talk to me next week again, I might say, ‘No, that shit was for real.’ So, I don’t know. I’m going through it. I crashed. It is what it is.”
