LeBron James is widely recognized as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. And with a career resume as decorated as his, it is easy to see why.
LeBron James Uncertain About NBA Future
But the reality is that James is not getting any younger as he has officially entered his 40s. And with 2025 marking his 23rd season in the league, many fans can sense that the end is drawing near.
However, according to ESPN NBA insider Dave McMenamin, the Los Angeles Lakers star remains undecided about his NBA future as he is unsure if he will hang up his jersey this season.
“At the same time, if James believes this could be his last season — something that sources close to James have insisted that he remains undecided about — he might feel even more responsibility to suit up for every game on what would then be a retirement tour,” McMenamin wrote in a recent report.
James missed the beginning of the NBA season, dealing with a foot injury. And he will likely want to relish every moment of his final NBA season.
But LeBron may not even be thinking about retirement at all. Especially after the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic at the NBA trade deadline last season.
And the move is already paying dividends for the franchise. The Lakers currently sit in second place in the Western Conference standings with an overall record of 3-4. Individually, Doncic has looked like a frontrunner for the NBA Most Valuable Player award. Through 17 games, he is averaging a near triple-double with 35.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 9.2 assists per contest.
James’ future in the NBA past this season remains uncertain. But with the Lakers looking like true contenders, there is no reason for him to really consider retirement right now.
