Snoop Dogg is known as the ultimate side quest king. But one of those recent quests got shut down by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Snoop Dogg’s Trademark For Cannabis Company Gets Denied

Snoop filed a motion to trademark the phrase “Smoke Weed Everyday.” A nod to the iconic closing line from Dr. Dre’s 2000s smash hit The Next Episode. Which features Snoop, Kurupt, and Nate Dogg.

Unfortunately, the USPTO denied Snoop Dogg’s request. To trademark the phrase for his cannabis business. In their response, the examiner noted that the phrase is much too common to trademark.

“This term or phrase is a song lyric commonly used in association with cannabis use,” the trademark examiner writes (via Billboard). “Because consumers are accustomed to seeing this term or phrase used in ordinary language by many different sources, they would not perceive it as a mark identifying the source of the applicant’s goods and/or services. But rather as only conveying an informational message.”

The examiner also noted that, though legal across many states, Cannabis is still illegal at the federal level. Which brings into question whether it would be “lawful.”

“Because applicant’s goods and/or services include items or activities that are a per se violation of federal law, the intended use or use of the applied-for mark in commerce in connection with such goods and/or services cannot be lawful,” the examiner added.

It should also be noted that although the lyric is often associated with Snoop Dogg, the line was actually delivered by the late Nate Dogg at the very end of the track.
