Verzuz started during the COVID-19 shutdown. Initially, it was a chance for legendary artists to showcase their greatest hits on Instagram Live. But it eventually ballooned into a major showcase. And per fan requests, it turned from an artist showcase to an artist battle. When the quarantine was lifted, the same fans that tuned in virtually began to pack out arenas to attend. And that eventually led to a lucrative partnership with Triller.
Swizz Beats Teases The Return of Verzuz
As the world started to re-open after COVID and artists were allowed to perform concerts again, the need for Verzuz wasn’t as big. And the event eventually dwindled. But in a new interview with Something About Rocks, Verzuz co-creator, Swizz Beatz, says that it has been a “long process,” but the event could be returning soon.
“It’s been a lot of work, a long process to build something and rebuild it again,” Swizz said.
He also added: “The easiest thing [would be to] leave as is. When we started, those were the early days, and now, we own [the show] a hundred percent again, and we know what to do differently. Most people would have given up on it, but Timbaland and I were like, ‘let’s keep it going no matter what people think. ’
At the end of the day, it’s easy for everyone to sit on the sidelines and give up, but it takes true warriors to keep fighting and show people that it’s never too late.”
The legendary producer also confirmed that upon its return, Verzuz will have a revamped format. That will feature “new talent.”
“[The new iteration of the show will] not be too different. Because we don’t want to go so far from the essence. We plan on giving people something amazing, but we also plan on showcasing new talent as well,” he added.
