When you talk about iconic record labels, the names that usually come up are Roc-A-Fella, Bad Boy, and Def Jam. But Cash Money may have all of them beat. Not only did Cash Money introduce legendary acts like Mannie Fresh and Lil Wayne to the world in the early 2000s, but that dominance continued in the 2010s when Lil Wayne introduced the world to Drake and Nicki Minaj through Young Money, a subsidiary of the Cash Money label.
Birdman Wants to Produce Cash Money Doc With Akademiks
With a history as rich as Cash Money, the story deserves to be told. And one of the label’s founders, Birdman, is looking to produce a Cash Money documentary with noted Hip-Hop media personality, DJ Akademiks.
“We gotta do it like it’s a whole documentary. We can’t just do a sit-down interview,” Akademiks told Birdman over the phone, via Akademiks TV.
Birdman then responded by giving Akademiks his vote of confidence. Noting he would only be interested in doing the documentary if the hip-hop personality was a part of the project.
“I want you to capture a moment,” he responded. “We can do it like a documentary. I don’t want to do the normal interview sh*t. That’s a good idea. It’s way bigger than that… I can’t do it with anybody but you, Ak.”
However, fans on social media were not as welcoming to the idea of a Cash Money documentary produced by Akademiks.
“Hell nah. Ak wasn’t around in the 90s. He doesn’t know s**t about the cash money era,” one fan said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Bulls*** he doesn’t know the rap game about down south, he needs to get someone from the south to represent him,” another user added.
“Won’t be nothing bout him not paying artists, I bet,” another user said.
To this point, nothing has been confirmed.
