Cher is proving once again that she does not care about what anyone thinks—especially when it comes to love. The 79-year-old icon recently opened up about her three-year relationship with music executive Alexander “AE” Edwards, addressing the 40-year age gap head-on.
Speaking on CBS, Cher didn’t hold back when asked about the scrutiny surrounding the couple. “We laugh all the time, you know? I just love him,” she said of Edwards. And for those throwing shade? Her response was simple: “Whatever.”
“They’re not living my life. Nobody knows what goes on between us, but we just have a blast,” Cher added, making it clear the naysayers can stay out of her business.
She described Edwards as “smart, funny and a delight” and added that their age difference doesn’t matter to her because, as she sees it, “you get older, but your spirit is younger.” The singer also joked about getting exactly what she wanted in a partner: “I used to say, ‘God, give me a toddler and a man.’ And I got exactly that.”
Cher spoke warmly about Edwards’ six-year-old son with Amber Rose, calling the kid “smart, funny” and “one of the most talented persons I’ve ever met.” Clearly, family life is part of the package.
Cher has long been candid about dating younger men, admitting the age difference can look “ridiculous” on paper but works perfectly in real life. She’s said she prefers men “raised by women like me” because they’re not intimidated by her personality.
On social media, she’s previously posted, “LOVE DOESN’T KNOW MATH, IT SEES,” addressing questions about the age gaps in her relationships.
In a more candid moment on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Cher shared a darker reason for dating younger: “The reason I got with young men is because men my age or older—well, now they’re all dead. But before, they were always terrified to approach me.”
She echoed the sentiment on The Kelly Clarkson Show, explaining that without younger men, she might never have had a date. “Older men just didn’t like me all that much,” she said, adding that younger men “don’t care if you’re, you know, funny or outrageous and wanna do stupid things.” Cher summed it up plainly: “I’m not giving up my personality for anybody.”
