Former Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has taken another issue with the NFL. And this time it’s about another veteran quarterback — Phillip Rivers.
Cam Newton Calls Colts’ Rivers Signing ‘Slap in The Face’
Earlier this month, the Indianapolis Colts announced that they would be signing the 44-year-old vet to the team after their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, got hurt when he suffered a ruptured right Achilles tendon on a non-contact play during their matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars last weekend. However, Newton, who has not officially retired from the NFL, is wondering why he didn’t get the call first. Considering Rivers is his senior by eight years.
“It’s almost like a slap in my face, bro. I’m not even gonna lie,” Newton said.
Newton has not played in the NFL since 2021. But despite an extended hiatus and a budding media career, he still has not officially retired from the league. Newton went on to say that the reason he has not retired from the sport is that he was hoping that an opportunity like this one would come about. He also said the fact that Rivers is eight years his senior makes it an even tougher pill to swallow.
“I did not [retire] and will not. Because of an opportunity like this… I don’t give a damn if [Rivers] is in their family. He’s 44 years old, bro!”
Newton’s last stint in the league came with the Carolina Panthers, the team that drafted him. He played eight games with the franchise during the 2021 season, starting in five. But the results were less than desirable. The team had a record of just 1-7 with him on the roster. And individually, Cam was equally as bad. Newton went 1-4 in the five games he started. He also had a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 5:4 en route to the team missing the playoffs.
