Genre-blending bassist and singer Thundercat just announced his upcoming album Distracted and dropped the project’s first single, “I Did This to Myself,” featuring Lil Yachty.
The album is set to arrive April 3 via Brainfeeder and marks Thundercat’s first full-length release since 2020’s It Is What It Is. For this go-round, he tapped superproducer Greg Kurstin (known for work with Adele and Paul McCartney) to help shape the sound. The stacked guest list already includes A$AP Rocky, Tame Impala, WILLOW, Channel Tres, and even a previously unreleased collaboration with the late Mac Miller. Behind the boards, fans can also expect contributions from Flying Lotus, Kenny Beats, and The Lemon Twigs.
Leading the rollout is “I Did This to Myself,” a woozy, psychedelic groove that finds Thundercat comfortably in his signature pocket. The track leans into messy romance and modern dating frustrations, with both Thundercat and Yachty venting about chasing a woman who clearly isn’t checking for them like that.
Thundercat opens the song in full crooner mode, reflecting on being down bad for someone who keeps him on the hook while barely giving him attention. The lyrics paint a picture of him knowingly playing the fool while trying to impress a woman who seems emotionally checked out.
Yachty slides through with a blunt, comedic verse of his own, poking fun at influencer culture and calling out the girl’s “busy” lifestyle, questioning whether her social media grind really counts as work. The contrast between Thundercat’s vulnerable tone and Yachty’s unfiltered commentary gives the track an entertaining push and pull.
According to press materials, the single’s focus on awkward, internet-era relationships is a theme that runs throughout Distracted. Sonically and emotionally, the album reportedly sitssomewhere between the heartbreak-heavy reflections of It Is What It Is and the sharper social commentary found on Drunk.
Thundercat says the new project is ultimately about perseverance and perspective.
“Sometimes you need to be distracted to focus in a different way,” he said in a statement. “Just enjoy it and have fun — and just know that the struggle is real and changes shape, but just to keep pushing forward.”
Elsewhere on the album, WILLOW appears on a track titled “ThunderWave,” Channel Tres joins Thundercat on “This Thing We Call Love,” and A$AP Rocky pops up on “Funny Friends.” The project will also house previously released records like “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time” and his Tame Impala collaboration “No More Lies.”
Distracted is available for pre-order now while fans wait to see what Thundercat has cooked up for his long-awaited return.
