The Atlanta Hawks came under fire after they revealed their plans to pay homage to one of the city’s most famed landmarks — Magic City.
The Hawks will pay homage to the iconic gentlemen’s club when they take on the Orlando Magic on March 19. The decision was met with backlash from some fans, especially after the team revealed accompanying merch for the Magic City-themed night. With many expressing concerns about celebrating a gentlemen’s club, with many of the NBA’s fans being young children.
Hawks to Proceed With Magic City Night
However, even amid the backlash, the franchise is planning to move forward with Magic City Night. According to a recent report from Front Office Sports. As one source tells the outlet, they have “no plans” to change anything concerning Magic City Night.
When the Hawks made the announcement, they called it a “special one-night collaboration to celebrate the city’s iconic cultural institution, Magic City.”
During the event, fans will get to enjoy the taste of the ever-popular Magic City kitchen. They will serve two versions of their popular lemon pepper wings. The original version and the Louwill Lemon Pepper BBQ.
But even though there will be no dancers present at the game, some players, like San Antonio Spurs big man Luke Kornet, found the collaboration with the institution to be offensive.
“The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world,” he said in a statement (via LegionHoops).
“Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society,” he concluded.
However, despite all the backlash, Magic City Night appears to still be a go.
