Afroman has scored a major legal victory after an Ohio jury ruled in his favor on March 18, 2026, clearing him of all claims in a civil lawsuit brought by seven Adams County sheriff’s deputies.
The lawsuit stemmed from a 2022 raid on Afroman’s home in Winchester, Ohio, where deputies executed a warrant related to alleged drug trafficking and kidnapping. However, the search turned up no evidence, and no charges were ever filed. Following the raid, Afroman used home surveillance footage of the incident in music videos and social media posts, including songs like “Lemon Pound Cake” and “Will You Help Me Repair My Door,” stating he aimed to recoup damages caused during the search.
The deputies—who included four officers, two sergeants, and a detective—sued the rapper for defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, seeking $3.9 million in damages. They claimed the videos subjected them to public ridicule and harmed their reputations.
During the trial, Afroman’s legal team, backed by support from the American Civil Liberties Union, argued that his work was protected under the First Amendment, emphasizing that law enforcement officials are subject to public scrutiny. The case also saw emotional testimony from officers, while Afroman made headlines for wearing an American flag-themed suit in court.
In the end, the eight-person jury rejected all claims against him. Following the verdict, Afroman celebrated outside the courthouse, declaring, “America still has freedom of speech.”
The ruling marks a significant moment in the ongoing conversation around free speech, artistic expression, and accountability involving public officials.
