Gamma, the record label that partnered with Ye to release his new album Bully, is not happy with Pitchfork. The multimedia venture took to Instagram to express their displeasure over the New York publication’s low review of Ye’s latest album.
What Did Gamma Say About Pitchfork’s Review Of The Ye Bully Album?
The album has received a wide range of reactions from social media and publications. However, Pitchfork’s review has generated the most controversy, with the self-proclaimed most trusted voice in music giving it 3.4 out of 10, the lowest score Ye has received in Pitchfork History. Responding to a post by the popular rap Instagram account Bars, Gamma commented in disbelief.
“Is this an April Fools Joke?,” Gamma commented. “We didn’t know Pitckfork still existed btw after they gave Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die a 5/10 after it came out and retracted it after it became the Billboard biggest selling/longest running female debut album of all-time. ;).”
In the review, lead columnist Kieran Press-Reynolds called the music on the album “weak introspection, feeble and characterless.” Press-Reynolds also critiques that the album is cheap retro Kanye imitation and lacks presence on his own tracks.
What Are People Saying About Bully?
Fan reaction has been mixed on Bully. Many publications such as Rolling Stone and Complex gave the album low ratings, citing it’s tendency to imitate prime Kanye, rather than act as a true return to form.
Pitchfork’s comment section, which requires a subscription to post in, gave the album a higher score at an average of 4.9, closer to the 4.6 Pitchfork gave Ye’s last album Vultures 2.
“If Kim Gordon made this same album they would give it a 10,” said one user. “Then to praise the leaked album he made during a manic episode over this is even more bizarre.” “Reheating the nachos as the kids say, said another user. “There isn’t a song on the album that makes me want to skip,” said another user. “Flows really well almost like a mixtape. Great production and a variety of genres.”
Instagram and X accounts also chimed in with their thoughts.
“Lower score than Vultures 2 is crazy,” said one user. “If God made an album pitchfork would rate it a 3/10,” said another user. “Pitchfork actually got it right for once,” said another user.
