On Wednesday (April 15), a New York Jury ruled that Live Nation and Ticket Master acted as an “illegal monopoly,” which has now landed the ticketing giant in hot water.
Jury: Live Nation & Ticketmaster Acted as ‘Illegal Monopoly’
Several states brought a civil suit against Live Nation in 2024 for cornering the market. This allowed them to continue ballooning ticket prices for consumers.
Live Nation tried to offer a $280 million deal to settle with the plaintiffs back in March. However, that deal was swiftly denied by more than 30 of the complaining states.
It took the jury less than a week to deliberate after the facts in the case were presented. Now it will be up to the judge to decide what a fair amount is.
However, no matter what the judgment is, it doesn’t sound like Live Nation is going to go down quietly. After the jury ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, the ticketing giant released a statement and noted that the jury’s verdict was not the “last word.”
“The jury’s verdict is not the last word on this matter. Pending motions will determine whether the liability and damages rulings stand,” Live Nation said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Live Nation will soon renew its motion for judgment as a matter of law, which the Court deferred until after the jury returned its verdict. That motion addresses all liability theories. The Court previously noted that Live Nation’s motion raises serious issues.”
They also said that they have a pending motion to strike the damages testimony in the case. And plan to appeal any “unfavorable rulings” related to the motions.
“There is also a pending motion to strike the damages testimony on which the jury’s award was based,” the statement adds. “The Court deferred ruling on that motion as well, while noting significant concerns with the damages expert’s analysis. Of course, Live Nation can and will appeal any unfavorable rulings on these motions.”
