How Is Michael Jackson’s Biopic Performing?
The film, which has received mixed reviews from critics, has struck a chord with audiences. Reportedly, Michael earned over $97 Million for its opening week box office, a new record for biopics. Overseas, the film reached even higher heights, earning over $120 Million internationally, making a grand total of over $217 Million worldwide on opening week.
The film shatters the opening weekend box office record for biopics previously held by Christopher Nolan’s Best Picture winner Oppenheimer ($82 Million). It also crushed both Bohemian Rhapsody ($60.2 Million) and Straight Outta Compton ($51 Million) for highest grossing bio pic opening weekend. With this trend, it could go down as the highest grossing music bio pic of all time. Bohemian Rhapsody currently holds that record at $910 Million grossed worldwide.
The real question left is simple. Will it beat out Oppenheimer for highest grossing bio pic of all time? That will be a tall task as Nolan’s film grossed over $975 Million worldwide.

Has The Film Generated Controversy?
The film, which explicitly leaves out any mention of Jackson’s pedophilic allegations, has divided some fans and raised some difficult questions.
A planned third act addressing the allegations was scrapped by the Jackson Estate, which had creative control over the film. Several former people associated with Jackson, primarily when they were children, have spoken out about their alleged abuse from Jackson.
Critics have also accused the film of trying to white wash or erase Jackson’s allegations.
Despite renewed attention on Jackson’s horrific allegations, it hasn’t stopped people from enjoying the spectacle of the King Of Pop portrayed on the silver screen.
