French Montana’s attempt to keep his $1 million Richard Mille watch lawsuit out of public view has failed.
A federal judge in Nevada denied the rapper’s request to seal court records tied to the case after it was settled, ruling that the filings had already been public for months and that reputational concerns were not enough to justify hiding them.
The lawsuit was filed by longtime associates Justo Obiang and Samir Gato, who claimed they loaned French a Richard Mille RM-59-01 during Paris Fashion Week in early 2025. They alleged he gave them another watch as collateral, but later that piece was discovered to be counterfeit.
French Montana denied the accusations, maintaining the watch was payment for promotional work he performed in Egypt rather than a temporary loan.
While the parties reached a settlement before trial, the terms have not been disclosed. However, the court’s refusal to seal the records could bring more details into the open.
The judge also made note that the case had already received widespread media coverage, weakening any argument for confidentiality. In the ruling, he even referenced one of French’s own lyrics: “it don’t matter what you do, man, they still gon’ hate you.”
