Kanye West took the stand Wednesday in his federal copyright trial over samples allegedly used during early Donda listening sessions.
The Chicago rapper told jury in LA his team followed the “normal process” to clear the music, claiming it was producers who intentionally dragged their feet and refused to approve industry-standard splits.
“I feel like a lot of people try to take advantage of me,” he told the jury. “As I sit in this courtroom today, I just think people are trying to make more than they otherwise would because it’s me.”
The lawsuit comes from producers DJ Khalil, Sam Barsh, Dan Seeff and Josh Mease, who say parts of their track “MSD PT2” were used in early versions of “Hurricane” and “Moon” played at Kanye West’s 2021 Atlanta stadium event.
The producers are now seeking damages tied to the listening party, merch sales and Ye’s reported Apple Music livestream deal.
