Louisiana rapper Mystikal has asked a judge to allow him to withdraw the guilty plea he entered in connection with a 2022 rape case, claiming he did not have enough time to fully understand the consequences of his decision.
The artist, whose real name is Michael Tyler, filed the motion Friday, just days before his scheduled sentencing. Tyler pleaded guilty on March 17 to a reduced charge of third-degree rape under an agreement that capped his potential prison sentence at 20 years.
According to the filing, Tyler was experiencing “significant emotional distress” and felt pressured to make an immediate decision when he entered the plea.
Tyler was arrested in 2022 on charges that included first-degree rape and false imprisonment. An arrest warrant alleged that he physically attacked and sexually assaulted a woman at his Prairieville home after accusing her of stealing money. The woman also alleged that Tyler took her phone and keys to prevent her from leaving.
A judge will now decide whether Tyler will be permitted to withdraw his guilty plea or proceed to sentencing under the existing agreement.
