Goodie Mob, minus Cee-Lo, are giving back to the community by making sure the world has a chance to see, Thomasville, the story of the death of a neighborhood.

The trio have signed on to executive produce the release of Thomasville, a drama centered on the decline of the Thomasville Heights projects, originally designed to give low income families a chance for a good environment. Like many projects, neglect, lack of funding, increases in crime, and police misconduct led to the community’s demolition in the 2010s.

Director Alex Woodruff’s short film stars Jay Jones from (P-Valley, Lovecraft Country) and Stephen Ruffin (Snowfall, Chicago Fire) as a father and son car bound confront their traumatic pasts.

The film has seen several accolades including Best Drama at the San Jose International Short Film Festival and Best African American Film at the Cleveland International Film Festival.

Woodruff felt excited about Goodie Mob’s involvement.

“That’s why [they] got to where [they] are. Because [they] made something very specific to Atlanta,” Woodruff said. “And [their] hometown loved it so much that [other people] had to take notice…Thomasville is my love letter to Atlanta and my family. As an ATLien with deep family roots in Georgia, I’m sparked to write stories that reflect our complex past and present. This film is a major milestone of that journey, and to have Goodie Mob along for this ride is the perfect pairing.”

For their part, Goodie Mob spoke on why the project spoke to them.

“We love how Thomasville puts a spotlight on public housing by incorporating Atlanta’s Thomasville Heights neighborhood,” T-Mo said while speaking for the group. “The film’s storytelling aligns with messages we’ve put out through our music for over 30 years, so it means a lot for us to be part of something so special.”

When Will We See Thomasville?

Screenings have been happening at short film festivals and around Atlanta, but Woodruff and Goodie Mob are working on finding a distributor for a feature film version in the future.

For now, Woodruff is in post production on his latest film, Cop City, and will continue to show Thomasville at select screenings. When the feature length script is done though, the plan is to get it an extended release.
