Lauren London has served as an icon and sex symbol for over two decades. Now, she’s taking on a big responsibility, playing the woman who christened Calvin Braudus as Snoop Dogg.
Deadline announced London would portray Snoop Dogg’s late mother Beverly Tate in his upcoming biopic. The film, directed by Craig Brewer, known for Song Sung Blue and Hustle & Flow, also nabbed Myles Bullock of BMF and Runaways fame, to play Snoop’s mentor, Dr. Dre.
Snoop himself will be played by Jonathan Daviss of Outer Banks.
According to Deadline, London’s role will serve as an important point of the film.
“After coming out of Long Beach, CA, Snoop Dogg turned into not only one of the biggest rappers of the 90s but one of the biggest pop culture icons by the end of the decade,” Deadline reported. “Tate, also known as Beverly Broadus-Green, was a church choir director who had a massive impact on her son Calvin Broadus, including giving him the inspiration for the nickname Snoop. Broadus loved watching Peanuts as a kid and Beverly would ultimately start calling him Snoopy because he reminded him of the classic dog from the series.”
London has acted with Snoop Dogg before, as she got her start as a video vixen appearing in music videos such as Pharrell’s “Frontin,” Ne-Yo “Miss Independent,” T.I.’s “What You Know,” and crucially, Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” before catching her big break as Erin “New New” Garnett in ATL.
