Lil Wayne dropped a bombshell last month when he revealed his mother asked him and his ex-wife to have a child for her to raise. Wayne claimed his mother sat the young couple down and wanted to raise the child to help with her loneliness.

However, Wayne’s ex-wife, Toya Johnson-Rushing who he shares the daughter in question, Reginae Carter, says that’s a lie the rapper has convinced himself of.

“When I saw that I cringed because I don’t know where that comes from,” Johnson-Rushing “But his mom never made us have no kid. We didn’t even know we were having a kid. But in his mind he’s maybe stuck there and really believes that happened, but I don’t know that to be true.”

Johnson made sure to make it clear Wayne was a great dad to their daughter. He also has three sons among other women such as actress Lauren London and R&B singer Nivea.

Wayne Tells His Version Of The Original Story

During an interview with the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Wayne revealed the story of how he ended up becoming a teenage father.

At the time, Wayne had just blown up as a standout member of The Hot Boys. He was in a relationship with Toya Johnson, his ex-wife who would birth his daughter Reginae Carter.

However, the circumstances behind that are more nuanced than anyone had realized before.

“I was 14. My mom asked for my kid. My dad had just got murdered that year, the same year I blew up,” Lil Wayne said. “I was a local rapper doing shows. Back then, it would be me going on weekend shows and coming back home for the week and going to school. We got the Universal deal, and I was like, ‘We have a tour coming up.’ When I went on that tour, we was on the road for like six months. When I came home, she was like, ‘Is this what you’re about to be doing? Is this what I should be expecting? You were gone for too long. I’m lonely. My husband’s gone.’ She was like, ‘Listen, let’s have a sit down. Me, you, and Toya.’ And so we had the sit down. My mom is my best [friend] so we had to.”

Unfortunately, Lil Dicky and Benny Blanco didn’t ask follow up or further questions to dig into subject matter that deserved more analysis.

if they had, context would have helped the story. Johnson was already pregnant at the time and was considering getting an abortion. Instead, Wayne’s mother asked to raise the child. However, from the way Wayne tells it, it sounds like she asked the couple to have a child for her, which isn’t accurate.

But now, Johnson is refuting that version of the story so now we have a classic he said, she said story.
