Lil Kim is perhaps one of the most influential female artists of all time. She was originally one of the core members of the Notorious B.I.G.’s Junior Mafia. Following his passing in 1997, she elevated herself to becoming one of the most influential artists of all time.
Busta Rhymes Gives Lil Kim Her Flowers
Recently, legendary rapper Busta Rhymes took the time to give the Queen Bee her flowers. Busta recently hosted an event at Brooklyn Chop House to celebrate the release of his new EP Dragon Season. During his speech, he brought Kim out on stage to celebrate her as well.
“Other alumni [are] getting our flowers now,” he said. “Missy got her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mary J. Blige got her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Missy did records with all of them. Mary did records with all of them. Lil Kim did records with all of them.”
He also implored the legendary emcee to get back in the booth.
“I made a decision the other night. I called Lil Kim[‘s] phone, and I told the queen, I’m tired of watching you sit down and be quiet. I’m tired of it,” He said.
“All right, Kim. We got to light the fuse, the dynamite stick… It’s time to bust your gun, queen. Time to get active again, queen. It’s time to show Brooklyn who the fucking queen of the borough is, queen.”
When she initially stepped onto the scene, Kim’s lyricism had a very gutter, street style to it. However, when Biggie Smalls convinced her to switch from hardcore rap to a more provocative style, to appease the male gaze. Her music really took off.
Her sexually liberated, provocative style of rap has become a staple in female rap. And she remains influential in the style of many of today’s female emcees including Nicki Minaj, Latto, Cardi B, and others.
