Virgil Abloh / Off-White
When Virgil Abloh first stepped on the scene, most people viewed him as one of Kanye West‘s core friends along with Don C. But Virgil has become a staple in hip-hop fashion. His iconic Off-White brand started as a streetwear style that had become popular among several artists. But after signing a deal with the Nike and Jordan Brand in 2017 to create the “10” collection, where he put his signature spin on the iconic brand. He has been influential on the music scene to the point where he has been shouted out on tracks by the likes of Gunna, Lil Baby, and Drake.
Throwback Jerseys
Sports and music are truly one and the same. And with the two worlds coinciding, the throwback jersey has become a major staple in hip-hop fashion. Although jerseys are used to connect fans to a team, in music they serve the purpose of connecting rappers to players. Throwback jerseys were also a versatile fit. Rappers could wear them on the red carpet or in a music video. In addition, it would also give notoriety to players who were not well-known outside of the sports community. A person may not watch sports but would know who the player was because their favorite rapper had previously worn their jersey in a music video.
Versace
With rap still on the rise in the 1990s, the fashion trends were starting to incorporate luxury into the streetwear look. And rap artists were able to bridge that gap whenever they donned the Versace brand. The brand created several different luxury items from the luxurious silk shirts down to the Medusa head sunglasses. The popularity of the brand today can largely be attributed to Biggie Smalls’ influence in the 1990s. But Versace has withstood the test of time as other artists such as Rick Ross and the Migo still wear the brand today.
Diamond Chains
Jewelry has become synonymous with the hip-hop look. And there are several items that have come to the forefront. From golden rope chains to Cartier bracelets, to gold grills. But nothing has emerged quite like the diamond chain. It has become almost a universal sign of wealth in the hip-hop community. It is among one of the first purchases that artists make once they sign a record deal. Consequently, it has also become uniform with record labels. Label execs will often give chains iced out with the record’s logo to new artists as a signing bonus.
