Smith Credits Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar as Inspiration
It had been nearly 20 years to the day since Smith dropped his latest album. His last album, Lost and Found, dropped on March 29, 2005.
Smith stepped away from the music scene for a while after becoming one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood in the late ’90s and 200s. Men in Black, I Am Legend, and Independence Day are just a few of the box office hits he has starred in.
His upcoming album was pretty random. But Smith says that he was inspiration by Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar to create his new project.
“Jay said, ‘Don’t fake your story,’ he was like, ‘You gotta say what’s true for you and you’ll be looking at the younger rappers and you’ll want that to be true to you, but you don’t live like that. Be true to your story. Tell your story.’ And that’s where I got the ‘Based on a True Story,’ from Jay,” he said.
“And Kendrick said, ‘Man, just say that s–t you have always been f—ing scared to say.’”
