Nicki Minaj is weighing in after a viral clip of California Governor Gavin Newsom speaking with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens sparked controversy online.
The clip, circulated by the social media page End Wokeness, shows Newsom addressing a crowd in Georgia and saying, “I am like you. I’m a 960 SAT guy. I can’t read.” The post framing the video suggested the governor was speaking to a predominantly Black audience.
Nicki Minaj took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her reaction, accusing Newsom of talking down to Black people.
“His way of bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he is & that he can’t read,” she wrote. “He’s not just TELLING them that they’re all probably stupid & probably can’t read, he’s LITERALLY SLOW-ING-DOWN-HIS-SPEECH… As if they’re children!!!!”
The rap superstar went on to criticize what she described as a deliberate shift in cadence and tone, arguing that the governor appeared to be intentionally altering his speech when addressing the audience. She suggested that the moment would “haunt him forever” and questioned whether Black voters accepted that kind of rhetoric.
As of now, Governor Newsom has not publicly responded to Nicki’s comments. The viral exchange has fueled broader conversations online about political messaging, perception, and how public officials engage with different communities.
