In addition, Reynoso also declared April 25 “Shyne Day” in Brooklyn.
“Shyne embodies what is possible when a community believes in its young people, and the magic that can happen when young people are given the resources they need to thrive. East Flatbush raised Shyne, and it only made sense to present him with the Key to Brooklyn as we team up to deliver hope and opportunity to dozens of young men today,” Reynoso said via BKReader.
Shyne also showed his gratitude for the honor.
“This is the community that raised me, and it’s important for me to pass that love forward,” he said. “There couldn’t be a better way to celebrate this milestone than coming back home and pouring into the next generation.”
Shyne was a rising star in the late 1990s and stamped his status as a top talent by 1999. His major hits include “Bonnie & Shyne”, “That’s Gangsta”, and “Commission”, which helped catapult him to superstardom. Shyne’s music still gets spins today. His signature track “Bad Boyz” (feat. Barrington Levy) has over 40 million streams on Spotify. Despite the app being created in 2006.
However, legal troubles put a permanent pause on his music career.
Shyne was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2001 following a 1999 shooting at Club New York in Manhattan that injured three bystanders. He was convicted of assault, reckless endangerment, and gun possession after a dispute involving Diddy. However, even after serving the time, Shyne has maintained his innocence.
