A federal copyright trial kicked off Monday in Los Angeles, marking the first time one of Kanye West’s many legal battles has made it to a jury.
Four producers – DJ Khalil, Sam Barsh, Dan Seeff and Josh Mease – claim Ye used their 2018 instrumental “MSD PT2” without permission in early versions of “Hurricane” and “Moon.” According to the lawsuit, those demos were played during a high-profile listening party for his 10th studio album, Donda, held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which reportedly brought in millions through tickets, merch and streaming. The producers are now seeking over $500K in damages.
It’s unclear when Kanye West will take the stand, but the trial is expected to last about a week. He was also recently in court nearby for a state case tied to allegations of abuse at his Malibu property.
