DJ Akademiks went on a heated rant aimed at Rob Markman and other hip-hop journalists, accusing them of being “lazy article writers” who rarely investigate or break original stories.
Akademiks argued that he has become one of the people doing the deeper investigative work in hip-hop media, pointing to his willingness to read court documents, examine cases and connect information before discussing stories with his audience.
“When’s the last time any of you n**s broke a f*ing story?” Akademiks asked while addressing Markman. He also took a personal shot at the veteran journalist, referencing his previous departure from HipHopDX.
Akademiks also criticized media personality Loren LoRosa, questioning whether simply reaching out to sources for comment qualifies as investigative journalism. According to Ak, independent creators such as Trap Lore Ross and What’s The Dirt? are often doing more extensive research and investigative work than some people carrying traditional journalism titles.
His comments highlight an ongoing debate within hip-hop media over what separates traditional journalism from commentary, content creation and independent investigative reporting in today’s digital landscape.
