Hip-Hop has officially gotten it’s own day. June 8th will be Global Hip-Hop Day and is set to launch in The Bronx with the father of Hip-Hop DJ Kool Herc on hand. The New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the Office of the Bronx Borough President and Hot 97 teaming up to host the event and it will take place at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the Bronx, the historic birthplace of hip-hop back in 1973.
This is only right because we all know that “if it wasn’t for The Bronx this rap shit probably never would be goin on”. Many other Hip-Hop pioneers will also be in attendance; DJ Red Alert, Kid Capri, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, Grandmaster Caz, DJ Chuck Chillout, Fat Joe, French Montana, etc. There will also be a street renaming ceremony and a community block party at Cedar Playground on the avenue block, which will be titled Hip Hop Boulevard.
Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr says “We are thrilled to unveil Hip Hop Boulevard at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in The Bronx, the birthplace of hip hop. The Bronx is an iconic, internationally renowned hip hop destination, the home of a once rebellious art form that has, over generations, become a global powerhouse. To designate this area as a landmark and celebrate this occasion with the pioneers who started it all—many of whom still hold close ties to this community—is a remarkable and historic moment for our borough.”
Let’s all celebrate worldwide.
