Kid Cudi has steadily kept himself in the news recently. Whether its going at trolls on X, or drumming up buzz for his upcoming directorial debut and tour, Cudi has stayed active. Over the weekend, he made headlines again with a very bold claim that has fans divided.
What Did Kid Cudi Say?
Cudi took to X to reflect on his career and legacy in Hip Hop.
“I was thinkin man, I have nothing to prove, I made my mark in the culture,” Cudi posted. “I have tons of fans that love me and support anything I do. At this point I’m just having fun. Doing more of whatever I want. I feel really good about that.”
A fan took issue with Cudi’s response, saying that while he loves him, he thinks Cudi should always wanna stay on top and be the best.
The exchange led to Cudi asserting that his legacy is secure.
“I’m always on top I changed Hip Hop forever,” Cudi posted. “There’s nothing that can top that. There aren’t many artists that can say this. I find it funny how people forget, but a lot of your favorite artists were inspired by me. So yes, I have nothing to prove. I coulda stopped years ago and still would be on top. I’m the best regardless of what anyone thinks. The facts are there. Hope this is clear!”
Cudi is clearly referencing his early adoption of melodic rapping, making his music purely about vulnerability and depression, which inspired the sad boi movement, and mental health being more openly discussed in rap. While others came before him, like Atmosphere, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, DMX, to name a few, Cudi was one of the biggest artists with that style and subject matter in their music, pre-SoundCloud crooner boom.

How Did Fans React To Cudi’s Claims
Naturally, the reaction to Cudi’s confidence created division of opinion and opened the floodgates for debate.
Some fans believed Cudi deserved to call his shot as an important figure in Hip Hop History.
“Man On the Moon was revolutionary for Hip Hop,” one user posted. “You made it ok and cool to talk about real s***. Without that album talking about real emotional and sometimes uncomfortable s***, a lot of the modern era rap wouldn’t exist.”
“Facts Cudi did the sad singing s*** before Drake and Kanye (West) btw,” another user said. “Without (808s & Heartbreak) shifting music to sad soft s*** in mainstream rap a lot of artist wouldn’t be around. Kanye did a trade off with Cudi like Drake did a trade off with The Weeknd. Cudi def helped changed a lot wit (Man On The Moon 1 & 2)
“Glad you feel this way, you deserve it man,” another user said. “Don’t ever doubt your place on earth, you inspired and continue to inspire greatness even if people don’t always like it.”
Other fans weren’t as on board with Cudi’s comments.
“Lay off the mushrooms bro,” one user posted.
“U also dropped Speeding Bullet 2 Heaven and that shit was certified grade trash,” another user posted.
“Kendrick (Lamar) thinks you’re lame bro,” another user posted. “That’s why he only worked with you once.”
Regardless of fans thoughts on Cudi, he’ll look to take a victory lap as he embarks on a nationwide tour this summer. Tickets go on sale next week.
