Music industry giant Clive Davis passed away in his home on Monday (June 22), a source confirmed to the New York Times. He was 94 years old.
Clive Davis Passes Away at 94
Clive gained notoriety after serving as President of Columbia Records from 1967 to 1973. During his time at Columbia, he helped springboard the careers of Rock and Roll icons such as Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and Aerosmith.
After serving as President of Columbia, he spearheaded his own venture, Arista Records. For more than 25 years, Arista was one of the top labels in the music industry. Housing talent such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Records, and Barry Manilow.
After leading Arista Records, Davis transitioned to the hip-hop and R&B scene and founded J Records in the early 2000s. While at J Records, Davis helped launch the careers of Alicia Keys and brought in other talented acts like Luther Vandross and Rod Stewart.
Clive was also a big part of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs launching his label, Bad Boy Records.
Over his career, Davis collected five Grammy awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
After the news of Davis’s passing went viral, fans flooded social media with reactions.
“He turned songs into legends, so even his eulogy will have a killer hook,” one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“End of a legendary era. What a remarkable life,” a second user chimed in.
“Few people have shaped the sound of modern music as deeply as Clive Davis,” a third user added.
