When it comes to sneaker endorsements, most NBA players are drawn to Giant brands such as Adidas or Nike. Which is why it was a major shocker when Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry joined the brand in 2013. Especially as one of the fastest-rising players in the NBA. However, after 12 years with the brand, Curry’s time with the brand has come to an end.
Steph Curry Set to Part Ways With Under Armour
The two-time NBA MVP has announced his departure from Under Armour in a press release on Thursday (November 14). However, his exit doesn’t appear to be bitter. As he noted his gratitude for the brand and the impact it allowed him to have.
“Under Armour believed in me early in my career and gave me the space to build something much bigger and more impactful than a shoe,” the four-time NBA Champion writes. “I’ll always be grateful for that.”
Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank also issued a statement following Curry’s departure. Noting that the company wants to focus on the “core” of the brand while also allowing the Warriors star to “evolve on his terms.”
“For Under Armour, this moment is about discipline and focus on the core UA brand during a critical stage of our turnaround,” Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank said in a statement. “And for Stephen, it’s the right moment to let what we created evolve on his terms. We’ll always be grateful for what he’s brought to the UA team.”
Where Could Curry Go Next?
During his tenure with Under Armour, Curry was able to branch off and create his own line. Separate from the UA Brand. As Curry prepares to become the biggest sneaker free agent in years, he promises that this move will only make the brand that much stronger.
“What Curry Brand stands for, what I stand for, and my commitment to that mission will never change,” Curry said in the release. “It’s only growing stronger. I’m excited for a future that’s focused on aggressive growth with a continued commitment to keep showing up for the next generation.”
Curry could elect to sign with another big brand like Nike or Adidas. In fact he considered signing with Nike before Under Armour. But during a pitch meeting, they allegedly pronounced his name wrong with soured any relationship they had at that point. He also could elect to a rising brand like Anta or Li-Ning like athletes such as Jimmy Butler and Kyrie Irving have done recently.
Whatever he decides, one thing is for sure. Steph Curry is the hottest sneaker free agent on the market.
