New details have emerged surrounding the tragic death of Jacksonville rapper Lil Poppa, shedding light on the moments leading up to his passing earlier this week.
According to TMZ, the Hapeville Police Department confirmed that Poppa, born Janarious Mykel Wheeler, was involved in a single-car crash on Interstate 85 in Hapeville, Georgia, on Wednesday morning (Feb. 18). Authorities reported that the vehicle remained drivable following the crash, and Poppa contacted his manager for guidance on what to do next.
The manager reportedly met Poppa shortly afterward in the parking lot of a nearby hotel. According to the account, Poppa remained seated in his car and spoke with his manager through the open window. During that interaction, Poppa allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot himself.
An off-duty police officer working at the hotel witnessed the incident and immediately called 911. Emergency responders transported Poppa to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially ruled his death a suicide, confirming he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Lil Poppa was known for his emotional storytelling and had built a dedicated fanbase through his raw and honest music. His passing has sent shockwaves through the Hip-Hop community, with fans and fellow artists continuing to mourn the loss of one of the genre’s rising voices.
