Benzino has weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding Fat Joe’s continued use of the N-word, offering his own views on race, Latino identity and the term “Afro-Latino.”
“There is no f*cking such thing as Afro Latino,” Benzino said while discussing the debate. He argued that many darker-skinned Latinos are Black and claimed that some fair-skinned Latinos distance themselves from darker-skinned members of the community.
His comments came as he addressed Fat Joe, who recently defended his use of the N-word while also identifying himself as Black.
Benzino also questioned why people are hesitant to use the word “African,” saying he does not believe “Afro-Latino” is an accurate racial description. He went on to argue that “Afro” is a hairstyle rather than an identity.
The remarks are likely to add another layer to the ongoing conversation surrounding race, ethnicity, Black identity within Latino communities and who should or should not use the N-word.
