TMZ first reported he passed away while in the care of his wife from Alzheimer’s.
His family released a brief statement.
“We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. His sonorous voice and singular talent will forever be synonymous with indelible performances in every genre. He explored the human condition in all its poetic complexity and brought hope not only to the far reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but into science fiction’s most iconic final frontier aboard the Starship Enterprise… He will be remembered for the dignity, compassion and humanity he brought to every role – in his art and life.”
Stewart was nominated for several Emmys and Golden Globes, along with a Tony, but never won. However, he did win a Grammy in 1996 for Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf for narration. Stewart began his career as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company, along with several Broadway shows. He was celebrated on stage and screen in the UK, but had his American breakout portraying the iconic Jean-Luc Picard On Star Trek The Next Generation. Further roles in Dune, Lifeforce, Pagemaster, A Christmas Carol, LA Story, Robin Hood Men In Tights, kept him going. Then, another major breakthrough as Professor Charles Xavier In the X Men series.
He then had incredible guest star roles on Frasier and Extras, and other shows, along with more vocal work.
He is set to return as Professor Xavier in Avenger’s Doomsday this December, possibly his final role.
