People have long believed Post Malone only became a rapper initially to ride the popularity of the sound and use it to launch his career, rather than out of respect for Hip Hop. Now, it appears he wants to go back to making rap and social media is not having it.
What Did Post Malone Do?
Recently, the country artist posted a short snippet smoking a joint and chugging a Bud Light in a cowboy hat, with a new song where he raps playing in the background. Malone infamously came up as a white rapper from Syracuse, New York, gaining traction during the initial SoundCloud boom with “White Iverson.” From there, he continued making slurry Hip Hop songs, before transitioning to full on pop music. In that time, he tried to distance himself from Hip Hop, going as far to say famously that Hip Hop is only for party music.
“If you’re looking for lyrics, if you’re looking to cry, if you’re looking to think about life, don’t listen to Hip Hop,” he said in a Polish publication. “Whenever I want to sit down and have a nice cry, I’ll listen to some Bob Dylan. But whenever I’m trying to have a good time and stay in a positive mood, I listen to Hip Hop. It’s fun. I think Hip Hop is important because it brings people together in a beautiful, happy way. Everybody’s happy.”
Malone further upset the Hip Hop community by saying he’s not a rapper and should be called an artist. For many, they felt Malone had cosplayed as a rapper to reach success and now didn’t want to engage in the actual culture behind it. This was distilled by Washington Post reporter Jeff Weiss in a scathing op-ed about Malone’s duplicity.

How Did Social Media React?
Many people still hold Malone in discontent after he fully abandoned Hip Hop to hop on the new hotness: Country. So naturally, they were not pleased with him returning to the genre he shunned.
“The country songs aren’t paying the bills anymore so he wants to be a culture vulture again,” one user posted.
“He can keep his ass in country we good over here,” another user posted.
“Post Malone threatens to return to hip hop music,” another user posted.
Other fans felt like Post should be welcomed back and it wasn’t a big deal. But the majority condemned a potential return.
