The murder of Jam Master Jay has long been one of Hip Hop’s most notorious cold cases. However, after two decades, it appears there may finally be a resolution according to reporter Shawn Setero.

Who Is The Suspect That Plead Guilty To The Murder Of Jam Master Jay?

Jay Bryant, one of three suspects in the murder of the Run-DMC legend, is owning up to his role in the case.

On Monday (April 27th), in a Brooklyn federal court, Bryant pled guilty to his involvement in the killing of the DJ. Appearing before Magistrate Judge Peggy Cross-Goldenberg, he explained his role in the crime.

“In 2002, in Queens NY, I agreed with others who were known drug dealers and involved with a drug deal with [Jam Master Jay] to possess and distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine,” he said. “On October 30, 2002, in Queens NY, I helped them kill [Jay] by helping them gain entry to the recording studio. I knew a gun was going to be used to shoot [Jay]. I knew what I was doing was wrong and a crime.”

Prosecutors agreed to connect previous cases Bryant had and impose a sentence of 15-20 years in prison for all charges. The deal states that a term of supervised release afterwards is on the table, per Setero. The plea must still be accepted by Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall, who has overseen the Jam Master Jay case since the beginning.

What Is Happening With The Other Suspects?

The case caught a break in 2024. A jury convicted Karl Jordan Jr. of firing the bullet that resulted in Jam Master Jay’s death and Ronald Washington for helping plan the murder.

However, in 2025, Judge Hall overturned Jordan Jr.’s conviction, ruling that prosecutors failed to present enough evidence to prove motive. Earlier this month, Judge Hall ruled to let Jordan out on bail as he awaits other charges.

However, prosecutors appealed and Jordan will stay in custody as an appellate court examines the ruling. Washington’s conviction still stands.
