Atlanta rapper Trim has steadily been gaining buzz as her viral hit “Coconut Water,” has taken over TikTok. Many have crowned her as the next breakout star coming out of the ATL. However, her recent comments about veteran rappers has put her at odds with several generations of rap fans, namely, the ones who laud JAY-Z’s 4:44.
What Did Trim Say?
In a wide-ranging interview with Kyle Denis of Billboard, the teenager answered a question regarding what excites her about Hip Hop. She seemingly sidestepped the question to instead make a controversial statement.
“I honestly feel like the people [who] are so-called the big dogs should look into starting a business so they won’t get washed up,” Trim said. “If you keep releasing music and it [comes and goes] because your heart isn’t in it, why not start your own label and invest in other artists and give them the opportunity to be under your wing? They should let other people take over now because that’s what I would do. And I wouldn’t even wait so long to do it. If I was LeBron, I wouldn’t play till I was 40, because it’s getting washed up. I would be after my prime.”
Earlier in the interview, when asked about her Hip Hop heroes, she replied the only hero she has is her mom.
Trim’s comments set the internet ablaze, with plenty of rap fans taking exception to her advice.
“If somebody gotta stop their motion for you to shine clearly you are not a STAR,” one user posted. “If the music is good it doesn’t matter what age they are, ppl are going to listen.”
“That’s a creative way of saying you don’t have enough talent,” another user posted.
“Drake, Kendrick and Cole did not beg Eminem, Lil Wayne, Jay Z and the other OGs to retire,” another user posted. “They stood toe to toe, neck and neck and delivered consistently. Drake did not wait for anybody to hand him their chains, he snatched it. This new generation of rappers lack the skillset, consistency and drive to replace the existing GOATS.”
The majority of posts expressed hate and bewilderment, with some blaming her team for not media training her properly.

Did Anyone Defend Her?
However, since the initial backlash, a small minority has risen up to defend the young rapper. Their argument is simple: people aren’t understanding what she’s trying to say.
Noted DJ and artist Bri Mafia, known for her spicy takes on social media, argued that people were missing her point.
“The amount of men speaking on this says so much,” Bri Mafia posted. “She’s talking about the lack of investment from the older gen. in Rap, which is true. Feel how you want about her artistry but mainstream rap is still ran by said big dogs who absolutely do not contribute to new/upcoming talent.”
Other users also detailed the lack of nuance from Trim’s detractors.
“You missed her whole point,” another user posted. “When was the last time Nicki Minaj made a song?? When was the last time Lil Kim, Trina, Rihanna made a SONG ????? instead of just stopping like they did give the next generation a time to shine instead of bashing, having fans tearing the new.”
“I just love her idk,” another user posted. “Y’all leaving out the part where she said ‘If your heart’s not in it’ + Lebron should always get whacked!”
While it’s clear Trim was trying to make a point about veteran rappers who have lost the fire and put out mid but skate by on their name and legacy, the way it came across bothered fans, leading to several interpretations of her intentions.
The self-proclaimed “Princess Of Rap” has also incurred the wrath of Barbz who believe their Queen B Nicki Minaj is in a cold war with Trim due to Minaj’s unfollowing spree of fan accounts that have posted support for Trim. Barbz allege that Trim is biting Minaj’s style. Time will tell if Trim continues her controversial statements in further interviews, or this is the last time we’ll hear “the real” from her ever again.
