Latto dropped her new studio album, Big Mama, on Friday (May 29). And it is already making headlines. But not necessarily in a positive light.
21 Savage Under Fire For Trayvon Martin Lyric on New Latto Album
In one of the new tracks on the album titled, Hostage, 21 Savage refers to gun violence victim Trayvon Martin.
“Rich as a b****h. But I’m in the hood so much she’s calling me Trayvon,” he raps on the track.
Trayvon Martin was a gun violence victim. He was murdered by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in 2013. Martin was going to the store for an Arizona iced tea and Skittles before hunting him down and shooting him. Zimmerson used the fact that Martin was wearing a hoodie to justify his suspicions. He was later acquitted of all charges. The incident and verdict were the catalysts of the national Black Lives Matter Movement.
With all of that in mind, the rapper came under heavy fire for the lyric.
“Was thinking about listening to her album and now have a great reason not to,” one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“ A non-us citizen dating a biracial person has a Trayvon Martin bar……. Why am I not surprised?” a second user chimed in.
“This is a terrible bar, outside of the weird implications, the actual metaphor is terrible,” a third user remarked.
After revealing her pregnancy in April, Latto had another major announcement about her fourth studio album. In a social media post, the rap star announced that the project, titled Big Mama, would be her last.
“5/29 My retirement album Thank you for everything,” she captioned her social media post on May 28.
If this is indeed her last project, it is a low note to go out on.
