Rap star Lil Wayne recently appeared on the Not Just Football podcast with Cam Heyward. And during his appearance, he opened up about the pressures of being a top artist in the rap industry.
Lil Wayne Gets Honest About Fans In The Rap Industry
Weezy explained how once you reach the top of the mountain, the pressure to consistently deliver good music builds even more so from fans. He also noted how some of the same fans who support an artist are often quick to turn their backs on them once they aren’t feeling the music anymore.
“They want it, and they want it now, and they want it great every time… and if it ain’t great every time, they forgot that you were ever great,” he explained (via Kurrrco/x)
Rising rap artist LaRussell recently spoke on this subject in a recent appearance on The Truth Hurts podcast.
In short, LaRussell said that he grew a “disdain” for Lil Wayne as he matured, despite being a fan when he was younger. Because as he got older, he realized that Weezy’s music lacked substance.
“I had grown a disdain for Wayne just because I started listening to everything like I started maturing as a human, and I’m like damn, this nigga wasn’t talking about nothing,” he said (via @ZadCozzy/X).
He also went on to say that Weezy contributed a lot of “negative” things to the hip-hop community.
“I’ve seen the negative that he contributed to the community. And I have to look like, ‘Man, what are the songs where he really talked about something and gave?’”
However, even though some fans may feel that they’ve outgrown Weezy, his body of work is something that can’t be denied. He was delivered several timeless classics, including his critically acclaimed album series, Tha Carter.
Wayne is set to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the album series on the ’20 Years Of Carter Classics’ Tour with The Game and 2 Chainz.
The tour will hit 30 cities and will run from June 30 until October 23.
