This year, Power 105.1’s flagship program, the Breakfast Club, moved to Netflix, as part of a deal between the streaming service and iHeartMedia.
Charlamagne The God Hits Back at Critics
Although some have been critical of the move from YouTube to Netflix, the numbers tell a different story. On Thursday (April 9), Breakfast Club host, Charlamagne the God, posted a screenshot of a Bloomberg article on his social media page. That declared the morning program the “early winner of Netflix’s new podcast effort. It also reveals that 13% of households are now watching podcasts through the app.
With the move to the streaming service already paying dividends for the morning program, Charlamagne took time to flex on the haters.
“The same people who doubted will study the Blueprint. Gratitude to everyone who watches @breakfastclubam on @netflix. We Truly Thank GOD for it ALL!!!,” he wrote in the caption of his Instagram post.
As part of the move, full interviews on The Breakfast Club are no longer available on YouTube. Netflix holds the exclusive rights. Naturally, fans who aren’t willing to splurge on Netflix’s monthly subscription fee have felt alienated to some degree. With their content accessibility now being limited to social media clips. But Charlamagne says that the backlash is only coming from fans who want to create a narrative.
“The funny thing to me is like, people will be like, ‘I’m not watching Breakfast Club on Netflix, but then you constantly tweeting about the America’s Next Top Model doc, you constantly tweeting about Stranger Things, you constantly tweeting about the Diddy doc,” he said during a recent episode of the Brilliant Idiots podcast. “A lot of it is just narrative. Somebody will get online, create a narrative, put something in somebody’s head, and then everybody will run with it.” From there, he pointed to viewship numbers on Netflix and claimed that he’ll be the first to admit if it backfires.”
