Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her family announced Tuesday, August 25.
Parton’s nephew, Brian Seaver, announced her passing in a video shared on her Instagram account on behalf of the Parton and Owens family. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
The news comes months after Parton revealed she was dealing with ongoing health issues. In May 2026, she canceled a Las Vegas performance and said she had been undergoing treatment for recurring kidney stones while also working to strengthen her immune and digestive systems.
Born in East Tennessee, Parton rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most recognizable and influential entertainers in American history. Her legendary catalog includes classics such as “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.” She sold more than 100 million records and earned 11 Grammy Awards during a career spanning more than six decades.
Parton also became a successful actress, businesswoman and philanthropist. Her work included starring roles in films such as 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, the creation of Dollywood and the launch of the Imagination Library, which has provided millions of free books to children.
Known affectionately as the “Queen of Country,” Parton leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond music, touching generations through her songwriting, personality, philanthropy and unmistakable influence on American culture.
