Years ago, Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa were both coming up as rising rappers from the Chicago scene. Their friendship knew no bounds, as they stayed in lock step during their come up.
However, success changes everything, friends drift apart, the business gets in the way and causes personal collapses. After consistently collaborating together, for years, Mensa and Chance didn’t work with each other, leading fans to speculate about a falling out.
On Vic Mensa’s new podcast, he sat down with Chance to repair their friendship and address their fallout.
They discussed issues with professional jealousy of each others careers, along with the subtle competition they felt as two Chicago kids who made it.
But, the breaking point reportedly came when Chance rejected adding Mensa as an opener for his Acid Rap tour.
“I said at the time that I didn’t want to do it because I was like, ‘Vic’s not opening for me. We at the same level. He doesn’t need to be opening.’ But in reality, I was just like, ‘I don’t want to have to split this,’” Chance said. “I’m sorry.”
Mensa then opened up about how Chance was in a far better financial position at the time.
“I was back living with my parents, and I was flipping the cushions on the couch, looking for quarters and s**t,” he said. “When you didn’t want me to come on that tour, I was f***** up, for real… I was hurt ‘cause I was like, damn, I’m takin’ s**t out my sister’s piggy bank.”

Chance & Mensa: A History
During the conversation, the two traced their friendship back to high school when Mensa showed up to an open mic at Jones, a selective enrollment public school on Chicago’s Near North Side, to rap. He came from Whitney Young, another school in Chicago. He met Chance in the lunchroom and their friendship blossomed from there.
They founded the save money collective, where they rapped together using studio time paid for by Mensa’s father.
Then, in a true test of friendship, older kids threatened to jump Chance at school. Mensa showed up with roughly 25 people from Whitney Young to back him up.
“Some n***** was in goddamn suits and s***, like some n***** came from out South, long story short, you know, found them, beat they ass, for fucking with Chance, you know what I mean,” Mensa previously said on All the Smoke. “It was just like, so we’ve been locked in since childhood.”
