Hip-Hop is in a drought. At least according to the Billboard Charts. The last hit to appear in the Billboard Hot 100 was Drake’s What Did I Miss. A single from his upcoming album, Iceman, which he dropped last July. It has been nine months since a rap song has charted on the Hot 100.
Pete Rock Slams New Artist For ‘Not Taking Care of’ Hip-Hop
In light of this new information, music producer Isaac Hayes the third suggested that Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s 2024 feud “killed commercial rap music.” And although he received a lot of backlash for his comments, Hip-Hop legend Pete Rock agreed with his sentiment. He posted a screenshot of Hayes’ social media post to his own account and added his two cents.
“This is exactly why I’ve been beefin’ about music being made,” he wrote in a social media post on Tuesday (April 14). “Some of the comments I see on my opinion come from an emotional place with these artists who pop smack about vets. They removed hip hop from the charts, mayne what more do you need to see before a change is made?? The vets are experienced.”
Rock goes on to add that he understands and respects the younger artists wanting to have their individuality. But insists that the genre has hit a “brick wall” because those same artists are “not taking care of” the foundation that was built by the OGs.
“I respect the younger artist wanting to do their own thing, but it hit a brick wall. Y’all are not taking care of it,” he continued. “Wreckless lyrics & ratchetness and wangsters all tryna prove something smh. With no charts for hip hop, your music won’t be recognized worldwide. A certain female artist making that ratchet garbage contributes to the demise of our beloved culture. People will get tired of you serving up the same recipe every single day when we’ve got X, Y & Z happening is diabolical. This post @isaachayes3 posted is the absolute truth. We need to unite, and we need true growth.”
