DJ Akademiks, the often-controversial hip-hop commentator, recently ignited the timeline with a bold declaration: Drake is the GOAT. While this might seem like a straightforward opinion, Ak’s unwavering support for the 6 God, especially in the wake of the recent rap beefs and his own fluctuating relationship with Drake, takes on a new dimension when considering the timing: Drake’s surprise new single, “What Did I Miss?”, which just dropped on July 4th.

Akademiks’ stance on Drake’s supremacy is, for many, a well-worn record. He has long been one of Drake’s most vocal and consistent cheerleaders, often defending the OVO boss against critics and rivals alike. This loyalty reached a fever pitch during the intense Drake-Kendrick Lamar feud, where Akademiks served as an unofficial mouthpiece for the Drake camp, frequently sharing information (and sometimes misinformation) and consistently championing Drake’s diss tracks. He even went so far as to claim Drake sent “threatening voicenotes” to Kendrick Lamar’s team, a claim that added further fuel to the already blazing inferno.

However, the relationship between Akademiks and Drake hasn’t always been a smooth ride. Despite Ak’s staunch loyalty, there have been instances where Drake himself seemed to distance himself from the commentator. Remember the infamous moment when Drake told Akademiks to “dip from my live” during a joint stream? That brief, albeit public, snub left many wondering about the true nature of their dynamic. Some have even theorized that Drake strategically uses Akademiks for hype and to disseminate information, without necessarily reciprocating the same level of support or access. This notion of a “one-sided” relationship or even “abuse of power” has been discussed, with some suggesting Akademiks suffers from a “music industry Stockholm syndrome” when it comes to Drake.

Given this history, Akademiks’ latest “Drake is the GOAT” tweet feels less like a sudden realization and more like a return to his default setting – a return strategically timed with Drake’s new release. “What Did I Miss?”, which surfaced seemingly out of nowhere on July 4th, serves as the lead single for Drake’s upcoming ninth studio album, Iceman. The track itself is notable for its reflective tone, with Drake addressing past betrayals and the fallout from recent events, including clear shots at Kendrick Lamar’s “Pop Out” concert.

It’s no coincidence that Akademiks’ public GOAT declaration arrived precisely as Drake was re-entering the solo music conversation. For a commentator who thrives on engagement and being at the center of hip-hop discussions, unequivocally backing Drake at the launch of his new era is a shrewd move. It re-establishes his role as a prominent, if sometimes polarizing, voice aligned with one of the biggest artists in the world, ensuring he’s part of the narrative surrounding “What Did I Miss?” and the forthcoming Iceman.

While Drake’s recent legal actions against Universal Music Group over Kendrick Lamar’s diss tracks have drawn criticism from some, including Akademiks himself who initially called the lawsuit “frivolous” and “dumb,” his ultimate return to the GOAT narrative speaks volumes about the enduring pull of Drake’s star power and perhaps, the transactional nature of their relationship. For many fans, Akademiks’ take is simply another chapter in his ongoing saga as Drake’s biggest fan. For others, it’s a reminder of the complex and often mutually beneficial (for Ak, at least) relationships that exist within the hip-hop media landscape. Regardless of where you stand, one thing is clear: when it comes to Drake and his new music, DJ Akademiks is rarely short on an opinion, and he’s not afraid to let the world know – especially when there’s a fresh track to amplify.
