The music industry is still mourning the untimely death of neo-soul pioneer D’Angelo. The creator of timeless hits such as Brown Sugar and Lady passed away on October 14 after a private battle with cancer.
D’Angelo created classic neo-soul tunes at the height of his career. But it had been some time since he had dropped any new music. His last album, Black Messiah, was released in December of 2014.
Fans React to Questlove’s Revelation About New D’Angelo Album
However, according to one of D’Angelo’s closest industry cohorts, fans may be getting some new music in the near future. According to famed Roots member Quest Love, D’Angelo could have a posthumous project on the way.
“You’ll see soon. With him, it’s always the sound of yesterday but for the future. And this record is no different. So when it comes out, you’ll know,” Quest Love said during a red carpet interview with The National News Network at this past weekend’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Fans were understandably excited about Quest Love’s revelation.
“There were rumours of Dangelo working on a new album, so I can’t wait to hear it,” one fan said on X (Formerly Twitter).
“Probably outtakes from Voodoo. I’m okay with that,” another user added.
Other fans described the album as “bittersweet,” with others noting that it is too soon for a new album, being that a mere week has passed since his transition.
Quest Love was one of D’Angelo’s closest friends in the music industry. Following the R&B legend’s passing, Quest Love penned a tribute to D’Angelo in Rolling Stone. In that tribute, he notes that he had been “bracing himself” to receive that call about D’Angelo for more than two decades. But once it became a reality, it was a gut punch.
“Truthfully, I wasn’t ready for that gut punch. I’d been bracing for it for some 25 years — since the deluge of Voodoo in 2000,” Quest Love wrote. “I always had a looming feeling concerning D, an ‘any moment now I will get ‘the call’“ feeling. Most of our mavericks who fly that close to the sun never get to see that journey through. And now here we are at 5:30 a.m.”
